句式结构 (jù shì jiégòu) Sentence structures

Formula: Declarative sentence + 吗?

bǎi hundred, 100 number 这本书一百块。 (Zhè běn shū yī bǎi kuài.) This book costs one hundred yuan. For numbers like 200, say 两百 (liǎng bǎi).

今天 jīntiān today noun 今天天气很好。 (Jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo.) The weather is very nice today.  
明天 míngtiān tomorrow noun 明天是我的生日。 (Míngtiān shì wǒ de shēngrì.) Tomorrow is my birthday.  
shì to be verb 我是学生。 (Wǒ shì xuésheng.) I am a student. The verb "to be" for nouns, not adjectives.
一月 yīyuè January noun 一月很冷。 (Yīyuè hěn lěng.) January is very cold. Months are written without a space.
二月 èryuè February noun 二月有二十八天。 (Èryuè yǒu èrshíbā tiān.) February has twenty-eight days.  
三月 sānyuè March noun 三月春天开始。 (Sānyuè chūntiān kāishǐ.) Spring starts in March.  
四月 sìyuè April noun 四月经常下雨。 (Sìyuè jīngcháng xià yǔ.) It often rains in April.  
五月 wǔyuè May noun 五月一日是劳动节。 (Wǔyuè yī rì shì láodòng jié.) May 1st is Labor Day.

十一月 shíyīyuè November noun 十一月天气变冷了。 (Shíyīyuè tiānqì biàn lěng le.) The weather gets colder in November. Months 11 and 12 should be written as single words.
十二月 shí'èryuè December noun 十二月是最后一个月。 (Shí'èryuè shì zuìhòu yīgè yuè.) December is the last month. There's often a light pause between "shí" and "èr", marked by an apostrophe.

多大 duō dà how old phrase 你多大了? (Nǐ duō dà le?) How old are you? Used to ask age. There is a space in pinyin.

生日歌 shēngrì gē birthday song noun 我们唱生日歌。 (Wǒmen chàng shēngrì gē.) We sang the birthday song. Often refers to "Happy Birthday to You".
生日卡 shēngrì kǎ birthday card noun 我收到一张生日卡。 (Wǒ shōudào yī zhāng shēngrì kǎ.) I received a birthday card.  
de (possessive/attributive particle) particle 这是我的书。 (Zhè shì wǒ de shū.) This is my book. Used to indicate possession or attribution.
我的 wǒ de my, mine pronoun phrase 我的家在北京。 (Wǒ de jiā zài Běijīng.) My home is in Beijing.  
他的 tā de his pronoun phrase 他的车是新的。 (Tā de chē shì xīn de.) His car is new.

diǎn o'clock, hour noun 现在三点。 (Xiànzài sān diǎn.) It's three o'clock now.  
几点 jǐ diǎn what time phrase 现在几点? (Xiànzài jǐ diǎn?) What time is it now?  
bàn half noun 现在是三点半。 (Xiànzài shì sān diǎn bàn.) It's three-thirty now.  
一刻 yī kè a quarter (15 minutes) noun 八点一刻是8:15。 (Bā diǎn yī kè shì 8:15.) Eight-fifteen is 8:15.  
…差一刻 … chà yī kè a quarter to … phrase 十点差一刻是9:45。 (Shí diǎn chà yī kè shì 9:45.) A quarter to ten is 9:45. The word is 差 (chà), not 叉.
…又一刻 … yòu yī kè … and a quarter phrase 七点又一刻是7:15。 (Qī diǎn yòu yī kè shì 7:15.) Seven and a quarter is 7:15. This structure is less common than "七点一刻".
现在 xiànzài now noun 现在几点了? (Xiànzài jǐ diǎn le?) What time is it now?  
分(钟) fēn (zhōng) minute noun 火车晚点三分钟。 (Huǒchē wǎndiǎn sān fēnzhōng.) The train is three minutes late. 分钟 (fēnzhōng) is the full word.
时间 shíjiān time noun 我没有时间。 (Wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān.) I don't have time.  
上午 shàngwǔ morning, a.m. noun 我上午上课。 (Wǒ shàngwǔ shàngkè.) I have class in the morning.  
中午 zhōngwǔ noon noun 我们中午吃饭。 (Wǒmen zhōngwǔ chīfàn.) We eat at noon.  
下午 xiàwǔ afternoon, p.m. noun 下午三点开会。 (Xiàwǔ sān diǎn kāihuì.) The meeting is at three in the afternoon.  
晚上 wǎnshàng evening, night noun 我晚上看电视。 (Wǒ wǎnshàng kàn diànshì.) I watch TV in the evening.  
七点半 qī diǎn bàn seven-thirty, half past seven phrase 电影七点半开始。 (Diànyǐng qī diǎn bàn kāishǐ.) The movie starts at seven-thirty.  
七点一刻 qī diǎn yī kè seven-fifteen, a quarter past seven phrase 我们七点一刻见面。 (Wǒmen qī diǎn yī kè jiànmiàn.) Let's meet at seven-fifteen. This is a more common way to say "quarter past".

句子 (jùzi) Sentences

Formula: subject + number + 岁(suì)。

你多大?/ 你几岁? Nǐ duōdà? Nǐ jǐ suì? How old are you?

我二十五岁。 Wǒ èrshíwǔ suì. I am 25 years old.

今天是星期几? Jīntiān shì xīngqī jǐ? What day is it today?

今天是星期五。 Jīntiān shì xīngqī wǔ. It is Friday today.

现在几点? Xiànzài jǐ diǎn? What time is it now?

现在七点。 Xiànzài qī diǎn. It is seven o'clock.

你几点下课? Nǐ jǐdiǎn xià kè? When do you finish the lesson?

我八点半下课。 Wǒ bā diǎn bàn xià kè. I finish the lesson at 8:30pm.

Note: the preposition “at” ect. in English, when it is used before time, it does not need to be translated in Chinese. So does the word do/did etc. in the questions in English.

两点十分 liǎng diǎn shí fēn ten past two (2:10) phrase 火车两点十分到站。 (Huǒchē liǎng diǎn shí fēn dào zhàn.) The train arrives at ten past two. Format: [Number] + 点 + [Number] + 分.
三点三十五分 sān diǎn sānshí wǔ fēn twenty-five to four (3:35) phrase 现在是三点三十五分。 (Xiànzài shì sān diǎn sānshí wǔ fēn.) It's now twenty-five to four. For minutes > 10, use the full number (三十五).
四点五分 sì diǎn wǔ fēn five past four (4:05) phrase 飞机四点五分起飞。 (Fēijī sì diǎn wǔ fēn qǐfēi.) The plane takes off at five past four. For single-digit minutes, add a leading 零 (líng) in more formal speech (四点零五分).
七点一刻 qī diǎn yī kè quarter past seven (7:15) phrase 电影七点一刻开始。 (Diànyǐng qī diǎn yī kè kāishǐ.) The movie starts at a quarter past seven. A common way to express 15 minutes past.
七点半 qī diǎn bàn half past seven (7:30) phrase 我们七点半吃饭。 (Wǒmen qī diǎn bàn chīfàn.) We eat dinner at half past seven. 半 (bàn) means "half".
七点四十五分 qī diǎn sìshí wǔ fēn quarter to eight (7:45) phrase 商店七点四十五分关门。 (Shāngdiàn qī diǎn sìshí wǔ fēn guānmén.) The store closes at a quarter to eight. Can also be expressed as 七点三刻 (qī diǎn sān kè) or 差一刻八点 (chà yī kè bā diǎn).
十二点二十分 shí'èr diǎn èrshí fēn twenty past twelve (12:20) phrase 我们十二点二十分见面。 (Wǒmen shí'èr diǎn èrshí fēn jiànmiàn.) Let's meet at twenty past twelve. For 12-hour format, add 上午/下午/晚上 for clarity.

工作 gōngzuò work, job noun, verb 我在银行工作。 (Wǒ zài yínháng gōngzuò.) I work at a bank. Can be used as a noun (一份工作) or verb (去工作).
zuò to do, to make verb 你做什么工作? (Nǐ zuò shénme gōngzuò?) What work do you do? A very common and versatile verb.
老板 lǎobǎn boss, proprietor noun 我的老板很忙。 (Wǒ de lǎobǎn hěn máng.) My boss is very busy.  
产品 chǎnpǐn product noun 我们公司生产电子产品。 (Wǒmen gōngsī shēngchǎn diànzǐ chǎnpǐn.) Our company manufactures electronic products.  
经理 jīnglǐ manager noun 他是公司的经理。 (Tā shì gōngsī de jīnglǐ.) He is the manager of the company.  
学生 xuéshēng student noun 我是北京大学的学生。 (Wǒ shì Běijīng Dàxué de xuéshēng.) I am a student at Peking University.  
工程师 gōngchéngshī engineer noun 我的爸爸是工程师。 (Wǒ de bàba shì gōngchéngshī.) My father is an engineer.  
教师 jiàoshī teacher noun 我的妈妈是教师。 (Wǒ de māma shì jiàoshī.) My mother is a teacher. A formal term; 老师 (lǎoshī) is more common.
医生 yīshēng doctor, physician noun 我想成为一名医生。 (Wǒ xiǎng chéngwéi yī míng yīshēng.) I want to become a doctor.  
全职 quánzhí full-time adjective 我有一份全职工作。 (Wǒ yǒu yī fèn quánzhí gōngzuò.) I have a full-time job. Often used as an attribute before nouns like 工作.
兼职 jiānzhí part-time adjective 他在做一份兼职工作。 (Tā zài zuò yī fèn jiānzhí gōngzuò.) He is doing a part-time job. "的" is usually not part of the core word; 兼职 can stand alone as an adjective/noun.
软件工程师 ruǎnjiàn gōngchéngshī software engineer noun 我哥哥是软件工程师。 (Wǒ gēge shì ruǎnjiàn gōngchéngshī.) My older brother is a software engineer. A compound job title.

句子 (jùzi) Sentences - 时间 (shíjiān) time

情问,现在几点(钟)? Qǐngwèn, xiànzài jǐ diǎn(zhōng)? Excuse me, what is the time now?

你几点(开始)上班。 Nǐ jǐ diǎn (kāishǐ) shàngbān. What time do you start to work?

我七点(开始)上班。 Wǒ qī diǎn (kāishǐ) shàngban. I start to work at seven o'clock.

你几点下班? Nǐ jǐ diǎn xià bān? What time do you finish work?

我下午六点半下班。 Wǒ xià wǔ liù diǎn bàn xià bān. I finish work at 6:30pm.

你的职业是什么? Nǐ de zhíyè shì shénme? What is your occupation?

我的职业是教师。 Wǒ de zhíyè shì jiàoshī. My occupation is a teacher.

你做什么工作? Nǐ zuò shénme gōngzuò? What do you do?

我(的工作)是教师。 Wǒ (de gōngzuò) shì jiàoshī. My occupation is a teacher./ I am a techer.
